I bought this two summers ago ...
Worked great for two summers .. just like most of these cheap A/C units.
For those who are older, A/C units with this kind of power would run
600 dollars or more .... when 600 bucks was a lot of money.
We
had our first 86 degree day in NYC yesterday. I nearly died. This a/c
unit which SERVED me, was pumping out lukewarm cool air. At 2 AM, I got
on the computer and ordered an 8,000 BTU Frigidaire A/C unit off of
amazon ... basically, that's now as inexpensive as when I bought the
6,000 BTU unit. It's coming tomorrow. This baby has had it ... But I
paid like 160 bucks for it ......
Oh yea, in the beginning there
was a noise problem. Here's the secret .. when you HEAR THAT NOISE, you
KNOW your machine isn't perfectly level (in accordance with the
instructions). I suffered a week or two with the noise, till it got
overpowering. Shifted the unit a bit ... and nary a bit of noise the
next few days. 4 stars is good. But they just don't last. I live in NYC
... with the constant, dust, dirt, grit entering these units ... Now I
clean my filter .... and if it wasn't so expensive,
I could probably
have this unit taken out, steam cleaned ... and MAYBE .. it'd be working
again ... but that would cost me far more than a brand new one with
warranty ... and the new ones have some sort of air cleaner in it (we'll
see how that works) ....
When I first installed the 6,000 unit, I was
saving 60 dollars a month in electricity. New Yorkers KNOW, Con Ed our
utilitiy company, jacks up electric prices upwards of 3X the normal bill
during the summer months .... My advice, buy it ... better still, go
for another 30 bucks and buy the 8,000 btu unit. The compact model is
not much bigger than this one and you won't have to push the unit at
full velocity.
