The Frigidaire FFRE1033Q1 is a terrific choice for
big rooms. It's rated at 10,000 BTUs, which is appropriate for a room up to 450
square feet. It's energy efficient, too, earning Energy Star Qualified status.
Noise levels, while not the absolute lowest in expert testing, are on a par
with competing models and not all that much of a concern in most of the user
reviews we spotted. Allergy sufferers may be drawn in by the ionizing air
cleaner, though we didn't spot any feedback on its effectiveness. Some say
installation is hard, but others that for a unit of this size, it couldn't be
easier. The warranty is above average.
Breaking it down
Performance
It's the strong, sort-of-silent type. Expert reviews and user feedback indicate that
the Frigidaire FFRE1033Q1 does a great job cooling down spaces up to 450 square
feet. Noise performance is described as mediocre when the fan is set to high in
one review, but most air conditioners in this size class don't do much better,
and loudness at lower speeds is rated to be very good. While some users
complain that this Frigidaire window air conditioner can get loud, most say
that it is acceptable, or even quiet, compared to other alternatives. Dehumidification
is good, too, at 3 pints per hour, but the air conditioner lacks a dehumidifier
only mode.
Ease of use
Feature packed and easy to install. One expert review dings the Frigidaire
FFRE1033Q1 for being hard to install, but the experts at Popular Mechanics say
that it's both simple and secure, and we didn't see too many complaints on that
score from owners. Popular Mechanics also likes that the remote is both full
featured and includes a thermostat "that allows you to see, set, and
maintain room temperature without having to get up." The air conditioner
also has an ionizing air filter and can be run as an air cleaner without
cooling. That could be a plus for allergy sufferers, but we saw no conclusive
feedback as to its effectiveness.
Durability
Good warranty. While every window air conditioner is subject
to some complaints about units that either arrived broken or that failed in an
unacceptably short time, the Frigidaire FFRE1033Q1 has relatively good track
record with owners in that regard. If anything does go wrong, the unit is
covered under a warranty that's better than what's typically found for window
air conditioners -- two years parts and labor for the entire system, plus a
parts only warranty for the sealed compressor system (the most expensive
component) for years three through five.
